Located at a distance of about 116 kms from Chandigarh, Bhakra Nangal dam is the world's highest straight gravity dam, constructed across the River Satluj. Chandigarh Bhakra Nangal dam led to the creation of Gobind Sagar, a 40 sq km reservoir. It has been named after the tenth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh. Rose garden of Chandigarh, India is the largest of its kind in Asia. Named after India's former President, Zakir Hussain, this beautiful garden was set up in 1967 with the support of Chandigarh's first Chief Commissioner, late Dr M S Randhawa. Chandigarh rose garden contains more than 17,000 plants. There are nearly 1,600 varieties of roses over there. It is a spacious garden covering an area of 27 acres. Dr. Zakir rose garden not just consists of the gorgeous roses, but also trees of medicinal value. Some of the medicinal plants that can be spotted here are bel, bahera, harar, camphor and yellow gulmohar. Rose garden serves as the venue for hosting the annual festival of gardens, a major cultural event of the city.

Sukhna Lake is an artificial reservoir in Chandigarh. A 2 Km. long promenade along the lakeshore is a popular place for strolling. In the morning & evening time, fitness buffs of all age groups can be seen walking, jogging, and performing yoga or vigorous exercises at the lakefront. The lake, incidentally, has Asia's longest water channel for rowing and yachting.

Rock garden has been established in the form of an open-air exhibition hall.  Panchkula

Panchkula is the newly formed 17th district of Haryana State. It comprises of two sub divisions and two Tehsils named Panchkula and Kalka. It has 264 villages out of which 12 villages are un-inhabited and 10 villages wholly merged in towns or treated as census towns according to census 1991.    The Panchkula District comprises a region which as a cradle of great civilization and culture has a glorious past located in the district is the valley of the rigvadic sarswati which was intimes gone by a hub of great activity. The district abounds in many places, the antiquity of which has been established by archeological explorations. Some other more recent places have acquired importance on the account of their economic and industrial. Still other places have been developed as tourist spots like Morni hills and Pinjore complex.

 Pinjore
Pinjore  

One of the beautiful places to visit near Chandigarh, Pinjore is 20 km from Chandigarh on the route to Kalka. Pinjore is also associated with the Hindu epic Mahabharata as one of the spots where the Pandava brothers rested while in exile. The gardens spread over 100 acres have three palaces built in the Mughal and Rajasthani styles, and numerous fountains and pavilions. The place was then known as Panchpura Later corrupted to Pinjore. The name Panchpura was deciphered from the Pinjore Baoli inscription found from here.

The town is an ancient historical and religious place. It is said to he the earliest habitation of man and it is said that the early man lived in Pinjore region round about Chandigarh, one and half crores years ago. Tools of Tower Paleolithic period fabricated on Quartzite have been found from the region stretching from Pinjore to Nalagarh. Important sculptures and other antiquarian remains recovered from the place can be assigned to the period ranging between 9th century A.D. to 12th century A.D.
 Morni Hills

A beautiful getaway, Morni Hills, 45 km from Chandigarh is a nature park at an altitude of 3,000 feet. Lovely place to connect with nature, here you can try rock climbing and trekking. One can also sight wild deer, the langurs and peacocks.

Morni Hills (Bhoj Jabial) are offshoots of Shivalik range, which run in two parallel ranges. The village of Morni (Bhoj Jabial) lies on the mountainside, at 1220 meters above mean sea level. Traditions assign the name of Morni to a Queen who is believed to have ruled this area. Among the spurs of hills, lie two lakes, the larger is about 550 meters long and 460 meters broad and the other about 365 meters either way. A hill divides the two lakes but there is some Hidden channel, as the level of two lakes remains the same. The people look upon the lakes as sacred. There is an old fort, which is now in ruins. The hills are covered by pine trees. The climate is salubrious and the area is suitable for trekking. The Haryana Govt. has developed this hill resort and provides facilities to tourists, a motorable road was constructed to connect the Morni hills with Haryana State Highway near Panchkula. A forest tourist hut "Lal Munia" and a PWD rest house were also constructed to accommodate tourists and trackers.
 Kasauli
Kasauli   A charming hill station 77 km away from Chandigarh, Kasauli is a good place to visit. There are numerous lovely walks around Kasauli, including one to Sanawar, another picturesque hill town and the location of a famous colonial college.
 
 

  RELIGIOUS PLACES IN MOHALI

  Gurdwara Nada Sahib
Gurdwara Nada Sahib   It is in Panchkula district on bank of Ghagar river, about 15 kms from Chandigarh. Guru Gobind Singh Ji alongwith his victorious army stayed at this place on returning after glorious victory on Mughals at Bhangani. Nadu Shah, a follower of Guru Gobind Singh Ji welcomed and served him. Guruji blessed Nadu Shah and said that due to his services, the place would be known by the name of Nada Sahib. Lacs of devotees visit the Gurudwara on the full moon day (Pooranmashi) of every month.
  Mansa Devi Temple
Mansa Devi Temple   Shri Mansa Devi temple is situated at Manimajra near Chandigarh, This place is the seat of the strength. It is said that the head of devi sati had fallen at his place. During Navratra’s in the month of Chitra millions of devotees from all over the country visit this temple for blessings of goddess Mansa Devi. There is a large garden of sacred plants attached to the Mansa Devi temple.
 Gurdwara Baoli Sahib
Gurdwara Baoli Sahib  

It is about 10 kms from Chandigarh on Zirakpur-Kalka Highway. It is said a descendant of Baba Gurditta Ji meditated here for a long period. On hearing about him, Guru Gobind Singh visited this place. The devotee requested the Guru to restore water supply to the thirsty people of the area. It is said the Guru shot an arrow into the ground from which sprang a baoli (a well). Here a fair is organized on every no moon day (Amavas).

  Chandi Devi Temple
Chandi Devi Temple   Chandi Mandir is a very famous temple located at a distance of about 15 kms from the "city of gardens", Chandigarh. It is situated about 10 kms away from the Mansa Devi Shrine. Chandi Mandir is dedicated to Chandi, the goddess of power. Chandi Devi temple is basically a Siddh Peeth, a place where wishes are believed to come true. The city of Chandigarh was named after this temple. During the festivity of Navratras, thousands of people visit this temple. When it comes to Chandigarh excursions, visiting the Chandi Devi mandir is like a must.
 Gurdwara Amb Sahib
Gurdwara Amb Sahib  

It is about 10 kms from Chandigarh in Phase 8 Mohali. It is said that in 1659, Guru Har Rai, the seventh Guru of Sikhs visited this place to meet his disciple, Bhai Kooram. The unique thing about Gurudwara Amb Sahib near Chandigarh, India is that it has a mango tree, which bears the fruit even during winters, as commanded by the Guru. These mangoes are distributed as Prasad to the Sangat. On the occasion of Sakrant that falls in the month of January, a fair is held in the Amb Sahib Gurdwara in the memory of the Guru and thousands of devotees flock here.
